The Pickaway County Library and the Pickaway County Park District are pleased to share that they have collaborated to create a Storybook Trail at Metzger Preserve in Williamsport! This Storybook Trail was made possible by a 2024 Recreational Trail Program grant administered through the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
Located at 300 Ballard Avenue, Williamsport, the Storybook Trail at Metzger Preserve is approximately half a mile on a flat, mowed trail. The 20 stations currently feature the pages of the book We're Going On A Nature Hunt by Steve Metzger and illustrated by Miki Sakamoto. Additional titles have been purchased with the grant funds and will rotate periodically over time and seasons.
This Storybook Trail combines a walk through our tall grass prairie along several of our shorter mowed trails which families will find fairly easy for walking with preschoolers and early elementary students as well as with large-wheeled strollers. Your route will take you along pollinator areas and woods which we hope you will find as a beautiful and relaxing retreat in nature.
Participants are encouraged to 'sign' the guestbook and complete a simple survey at the end of the trail through a QR code. You can also find this survey here
The Metzger Preserve has prairies, woods and access to Deer Creek where visitors may be able to see unique geological features called concretions, depending on the water level.
We encourage you to come visit our new Storybook Trail, skip rocks in the creek and picnic at the Village’s neighboring Ballard Avenue Park.
Books about prairies, trees, rivers and more can be found at the Pickaway County Library. Reserve items through the library’s website here
