Meet the Gray Treefrogs: Our Charming New Residents
We are thrilled to introduce the newest residents of the Nature Nook (and future Nature Center): two adorable Gray Treefrogs! 🌿🐸 These incredible creatures bring a touch of magic and a lot of charm to our District Headquarters, and they need your help to find the perfect names!
Get to Know the Gray Treefrog
The Gray Treefrog is a fascinating species, and we are excited to share some amazing facts about them. The Gray Treefrog holds the title of the largest treefrog in the northern U.S. These frogs can change colors from gray-green to light pearl gray, blending seamlessly with their surroundings. Their excellent camouflage makes them almost impossible to spot on trees! Despite their color-changing abilities, you can always recognize a Gray Treefrog by the light-colored spot beneath each eye and the bright yellow coloration on the inside of their thighs. Their well-developed adhesive toe discs allow them to climb trees and shrubs quickly, performing impressive acrobatics to catch insects.
Gray Treefrogs spend most of their lives in trees and shrubs, calling out especially before or after summer rains. They come down only during the breeding season to congregate at ponds. The Gray Treefrog’s call is a melodious trill, lasting one to three seconds. It is slower and softer compared to the harsher trill of Cope’s Gray Treefrog. These frogs are found throughout Ohio, making them a familiar yet extraordinary part of our local wildlife.
